Panelists |
Eric Deggans TV/Media Critic for the St. Petersburg Times and has been with the newspaper in
one writing position or another since 1995. Before serving as media critic,
Deggans sat on the newspaper’s editorial board and wrote bylined opinion columns
specializing in race issues, pop culture, media and national affairs. Mr.
Deggans is the President of the Tampa Bay Association of Black Journalists,
serves as a guest lecturer and adjunct professor and is the recipient of
numerous awards honors including an ethics fellowship at The Poynter Institute. |
Doug Smith is the
investigative reporter at the FOX affiliate WTVT-TV in Tampa. Mr. Smith, along
with investigative producer Lisa Blegen and photojournalist Craig Davisson, has
won numerous Emmy awards over the years, and the Alfred I. duPont-Colombia
University Silver Baton for their series, “Small Town Justice.” This compelling
series was also a finalist for the 2009 Scripps Howard Foundation National
Journalism Award. Prior to joining WTVT-TV in 2003, Smith served as the managing
editor of WFTV-TV in Orlando, and at various anchor/reporting positions in
California and Las Vegas.

Spencer Briggs is an
independent filmmaker who has been involved in the writing and production of
news and documentary projects for more than two decades, and has served as a
news and documentary producer for CBS, NBC, and ABC network news affiliates. In
addition, Mr. Briggs has produced numerous documentaries, specials and political
debates for PBS. His most recent projects have been the WEDU Emmy award-winning
productions “Central Avenue Remembered,” tracing the people and places of one of
Tampa’s most historic communities, and “Heroes from the Bay” profiling Veterans
of World War II.

Susan Taylor Martin joined
the St. Petersburg Times in 1982 as the executive business editor; she moved to
the national reporting staff in 1986 and became a deputy managing editor in
1992. Ms. Martin returned to writing in 1997 and to date, serves as the senior
correspondent covering foreign affairs. Throughout her career Ms. Martin has
received numerous awards and has covered the two wars in Iraq, the war in
Kosovo, and the war against terror in Afghanistan and Pakistan. The death and
funeral of Princess Diana, and terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, are
among her many breaking stories. |
