Meet Don Germaise, volunteer for Feeding Tampa Bay, providing food to families in need in the 10-county area of West Central Florida. Don retired from a local news organization ten years ago and has been an active volunteer at several local non-profits. With a heart for volunteerism, Don finds an opportunity to give back and serve any chance he gets, even while traveling or on vacation.
When asked why he spends so much time volunteering, Don said, "Everyone's grandmother said to them at some point, 'it's better to give than receive,' and it really is. I just love giving. It's in me, and it's in you. Helping others makes me feel good inside. Thinking I can help give people a full belly from a hot meal, that's the best feeling in the world."
On the day of Don's interview, he passed out 108 meals at the Trinity Café drive-thru and assisted the dine-in staff by serving 112 hot meals inside. Since 2001, Trinity Café has provided over 1.9 million meals to people in need.
When asked what message of kindness he would like to share with the world, Don said, "Everyone has the ability to give time, treasure, or talent. Find out what your passion is, and go volunteer. There is something out there for everyone. I guarantee it. There are so many ways to help in Tampa Bay, and it makes me feel good knowing I am doing good, and anyone can feel that way too."
Don lives what he speaks. As people pulled up to the Feeding Tampa Bay drive-thru for food, Don made jokes and greeted them with a big smile. He went out of his way to show he cared for the people he was helping. Don doesn't just feed people in need. He forms a human connection and brings sunshine into each person's life.
