The History of Gospel in Tampa Bay

The History of Gospel in Tampa Bay

Tampa Bay boasts numerous talented songwriters, musicians, choirs, soloists, and choral vocalists. Their unique styles of Gospel Music have consistently provided hope and courage, resonating from the pulpit to local social justice initiatives. The significant role of churches and Gospel Music continues to have a lasting impact on the Tampa Bay community.

Join us on Thursday, February 1, from 6 to 8 p.m., as WEDU PBS invites you to an evening filled with uplifting Gospel Music and history at Beulah Baptist Institutional Church, located at 1006 W Cypress St, Tampa, FL 33606. Fred Hearns, Curator of Black History at the Tampa Bay History Center, will lead an inspiring conversation with individuals who have memories of legendary Gospel experiences and discuss its evolution over the years.

This free community event aims to celebrate the history of Gospel Music and acknowledge the contributions of radio announcers, promoters, and prominent Gospel Singers who played a pivotal role in establishing Tampa’s vibrant Gospel Community. The event will feature special performances by the Gospel Choir at the University of South Florida, Beulah Baptist Institutional Church Male Chorus, Alex Harris (founder of Arts for Teens Conservatory), and the Walton Academy for the Performing Arts.

Additionally, we will present a preview screening of GOSPEL, the upcoming PBS docuseries by Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr.

If you have questions about the event, please send an email to Joyce Cotton, Director of Marketing and Community Partnerships, at jcotton@wedu.org

We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate the spirit of Gospel Music!
