Food scraps in a compost pile

The team here at Sustain was saddened to learn our Spring Fashion Show models have passed.  All organic matter has its time.  As Vision eloquently put it in Age of Ultron, “Nothing is beautiful because it lasts.”

Back in September 2022, we learned how veggie scraps can evolve intoa delicious broth.  Today, we dive into another method to sustainably use organic waste – composting.

Composting is the natural process of recycling organic matter into a valuable fertilizer that can enrich soil and plants.  Mother Nature has a variety of ways to decompose organic matter; humans use composting techniques to speed up that process.  A wide range of food scraps, paper products, and lawn materials can be composted.

How can you compost?  Well, that can be tricky and is often dependent on local laws and your physical space.  You will need a space that offers your organic waste both aeration and moisture.  That could be a small bin inside an apartment or a large crate in your backyard.  Here’s a great article from the NRDC covering Composting 101.

“Composting sounds like a lot of work.  Why should I care?”  Fantastic question.  Here are five (5) reasons to give composting a shot:

  1. Reduce organic waste in landfills
  2. Cut emissions from landfills
  3. Improve soil
  4. Conserve water
  5. Lessen dependence on chemical fertilizers

Organic waste is a part of life.  Using that waste in a sustainable manner is part of a great life.
