Did you know that the cleaning products you might use are made of harsh chemicals and fragrances that can harm children, pets, and people with sensitive skin? Knowing the ingredients inside your cleaning products is essential.
Green cleaning allows you to keep an eco-friendly mindset as well as cut down on household waste and costs. Here are a few simple steps and strategies to help you move forward in a green cleaning direction.
1. Use an old towel or old shirt to clean instead of paper towels.
Instead of throwing away your cleaning cloths after each use, opt for a reusable material you can throw in the wash instead of the trash.
2. Use plant-based products.
Most plant-based products are made from essential oils, aloe vera extract, water, vinegar, and recycled fibers. You can also make your own cleaning products from ingredients you find in your pantry or fridge. Baking soda, white vinegar, salt, and lemons are great cleaning ingredients!
3. Repurpose old toothbrushes.
Instead of throwing out your old toothbrushes, you can save them for cleaning. Toothbrushes allow you to clean hard-to-reach spaces such as the sink and tile grout lines.
4. Use eco-friendly ingredients for the laundry.
When doing laundry, look for products free from artificial fragrances or dyes. Some ingredients in detergent are harmful and can cause issues for people with sensitive skin. You can also substitute your dryer sheets for a reusable alternative. Next time you buy dryer sheets, buy wool dryer balls instead. These can last a few years, and it helps you reduce waste.
5. Purchase reusable cleaning containers.
Instead of buying plastic bottles of cleaner, switch to reusable glass containers. You can refill your glass containers with your DIY cleaning ingredients or visit a refill store. Over time, you will save on costs and household waste.
By becoming aware of the products you use to clean your home, you are taking steps towards sustainable living. As you begin switching out your old cleaning products for eco-friendly products, you are helping the environment and keeping a clean home!
