Sustainable Gift Giving

As we deck the halls and prepare for the holidays, WEDU PBS wants to share with you some sustainable gift-giving ideas. Let's partner together to reduce our waste and carbon footprint this holiday season! According to the EPA, the average U.S. household waste increases by 25% from Thanksgiving to New Years.

Most of our waste ends up in landfills, which increases methane in our atmosphere. Methane is a greenhouse gas that is three times stronger than carbon dioxide and warms our planet at an unsafe rate.

One of the best things we can do to reduce our carbon footprint is to reduce our consumption. This means buying fewer physical goods, especially those made of petrochemicals, aka plastic. If you have little ones, a thing I always look for in gifts is a way to promote lifelong learning.

So, how can we give gifts that reduce consumption and promote learning and curiosity?

Give the gift of experience.

These gifts can include tickets to an event, museum, or location. Plan a thoughtful day out or a trip for your loved ones. The memories you make will last longer than any physical gift!

Give the gift of Streaming

PBS Passport is an excellent gift for the entire family. The littles can watch PBS passport, and you can get access to Masterpiece mysteries, Independent Lens documentaries, and many more.

Donate on behalf of a loved one.

Donate to an organization representing the value of the person you are trying to find a gift for. If they're a fan of WEDU PBS, you can easily make a Tribute Gift.

How we spend our money this holiday season sends a message, and it can impact how we address climate change. Reducing our consumption of petrochemical products and manufactured goods that require fossil fuels is empirical to mitigating climate change.

Let's focus on taking steps to sustainability this holiday season!
