Every year, 7 Billion dollars is spent in the gift wrapping industry. That's approximately 2.3 million pounds of avoidable waste. For something that is just ripped up and thrown away, these numbers are shocking!
Let's work together to shrink gift wrap waste by looking at more sustainable ways to wrap your holiday gifts this year.
Reuse bags and boxes you already have
Do you ever save gift bags or boxes that were given to you? If so, try to reuse those. You can even upcycle them by adding your own personalized flair!
Find fun second-hand material at the thrift store or around your house.
Fabric, newspaper, old bags, and maps make perfect gift-wrapping alternatives. Look around your house or go to a local thrift store to see what you can find to wrap your gift. It will definitely stand out!
Recycle and dispose of your wrapping materials
Start with using what you have and reuse it as much as possible. If you can no longer use your gift-wrapping items, see if it's recyclable.
Go all natural with festive touches
Instead of using those shiny plastic bows, try going all natural this year with tree branches, tiny pinecones, cotton, dried cranberries, etc. Try gathering items off your Christmas tree or go outside to see what you can find to top off your gift.
What can I recycle?
Knowing what type of wrapping supplies can and can not be recycled is important. Let's look at some examples of what you should place in your recycling bin and at some items you should try to avoid or make sure you do not put in the recycle.
