Traveling Sustainably

Exploring our planet is one of the best ways to appreciate the beauty around us. But packing up and seeing the world doesn’t mean you need to leave behind eco-friendly habits!

The World Tourism Organization predicts that between 2016 and 2030, our planet will face a 25% rise in travel-related COemissions from tourism.

We understand that traveling can be a privilege and income, access to child care, ability, safety, and much more are considered when booking a trip. No matter what your vacation looks like, taking time to rest is important to your well-being. So, how do we care for Earth while on the road? By traveling sustainably!

Rethink Your Ride

Some destinations can only be reached by plane, but what about those getaways closer to home? Opt for public transit such as buses and trains! Planes emit a massive 30 and 50 times more COthan trains. With buses and carpooling alternatives, you can reduce the number of cars whose exhaust fumes pollute our air.

Offset Carbon Emissions

Carbon offsetting allows you to make up for the COemissions from your travels by giving back to nature. Online tools help you to determine your trip’s carbon footprint, with the option to donate that amount to a sustainable cause.

Shop and Eat Locally

Supporting local communities not only creates an authentic experience, it’s good for the planet! Imported items and corporate lodging create a larger carbon footprint than local choices. With less transportation and packaging used to ship long-distance items, including food, supporting local businesses helps to sustain the region’s economy and land.

Pack Reusable Items

Going on vacation doesn’t mean you need to leave behind your sustainable swaps. Bring your reusable cutlery, water bottles, and bags that fit into your luggage. Looking to wash clothes without a dryer? Use a travel clothesline! Air-drying clothes is a perfect way to cut back on energy-consuming machines while leaving your items with that fresh air scent.

There are a growing number of programs that can help plan the perfect eco-friendly trip, such as Lokal which focuses on helping local communities. Use these travel tips for your next sustainable getaway for a vacation that keeps both you and our planet healthy!
