In June, we honor the LGBTQIA community by celebrating Pride Month. On June 28, 1969, the Stonewall riots began and marked a turning point in the LGBTQIA movement. When a group at the Stonewall Inn, a gay bar in New York City, was being harassed by police officers, the community rose against it. Stonewall Inn patrons took a stand against police brutality and injustice. The riot inspired six-days of demonstrations to protest the discrimination of gay and lesbian communities. The first anniversary of the Stonewall riots was celebrated with pride parades in Chicago, San Francisco, Los Angeles, and near the Stonewall Inn in New York.
Since the Stonewall riots, activists have formed LGBTQIA civil rights organizations nationwide. Pride Month celebrations honor those who have fought for their rights and are a reminder that the movement for equality continues today.
