Recipe | Puerto Rican Majarete
Ingredients
- 1 cup of rice flour
- 7 cans of Coconut Milk
- 1 Cup of tea --> Made with star anise, ginger, cinnamon, and very few cloves
- Pinch of salt
- Sugar to your taste
Directions
- Mix all the ingredients in a pot. Bring it to a slow boil as you mix, and then lower the temperature.
- Continue mixing until it thickens, and then put the hit on low for 30 minutes and cover it.
- Throughout the thirty minutes on low heat, check on it and mix it at least three times.
- Let it cool. (For the best taste, put it in the fridge after it cools so that you serve it cold, and sprinkle cinnamon on top.)
The Story
The only time I had majarete was when I went home for Christmas, and it was a few times we made a family trip back to Puerto Rico. It is a traditional dessert passed down by the women in my great-grandmother's lineage, and my grandmother has kept the tradition. When the smell of it hit my nose I know that I am home for Christmas.
